A Whittier patient story
RV, 62, a Whittier College alumnus who researched implants for six months before calling us
RV graduated from Whittier College in the mid-1980s and has lived in Uptown Whittier ever since. When he began losing three lower molars to bone loss in late 2024, he spent six months reading clinical studies, watching surgical technique videos, and collecting quotes from six different practices from Pasadena to Long Beach. He came to us last because a college acquaintance had referred him, and he wanted to compare our consultation against everything else he had seen.
The consultation took 90 minutes. Dr. Qiu walked RV through his 3D CBCT scan slice by slice, identified a nerve proximity issue on the lower left that two prior consultations had missed, and mapped a sequenced three-implant plan with a 4-month healing interval between placement and loading. The written treatment plan RV left with listed every fee, every clinical step, and every contingency, including what would happen if bone density at the lower-left site proved insufficient at the time of surgery. No other practice had provided anything close to that level of detail.
RV chose us. He drove the 12 minutes from Uptown Whittier via Whittier Blvd west to the 605 north for every appointment over the following seven months. All three implants integrated without complication. His 18-month follow-up CBCT showed stable peri-implant bone at all sites, including the nerve-proximity molar that had concerned earlier consultants.
Since completing treatment, RV has referred four family members to our office: his wife, his brother, and two cousins who also live in the Whittier area. That referral pattern reflects something we see consistently from Whittier patients. Once one family member has a strong experience, the rest of the household follows. Whittier is, in that sense, a community that makes decisions together.

Getting to us from Whittier
What the drive looks like from every Whittier neighborhood
Our office is at 8500 Florence Ave, Suite 100, in Downey. Whittier sits directly to the east along the 605 freeway corridor, making every Whittier neighborhood reachable in 12 to 18 minutes under normal conditions. The 605 is the primary connector; Whittier Blvd parallels it for those who prefer surface streets.
From Uptown Whittier (Greenleaf Ave and Philadelphia St area): Take Whittier Blvd west to the 605 north, then exit Florence Ave west. About 12 minutes in light traffic. This is the route RV used for every appointment throughout his treatment.
From the Whittier College area (Painter Ave and Philadelphia St): Take Greenleaf Ave south to the 605 north, then Florence Ave west. About 14 minutes. Students and staff often schedule the consultation during the midday gap between classes; the round trip fits comfortably in two hours.
From Whittwood Town Center area (Whittier Blvd and Colima Rd): Take Whittier Blvd west directly into Downey. No freeway needed; the surface route is well-timed and typically runs 14 minutes. This is the most convenient route for patients in central and east Whittier.
From south Whittier near the La Mirada border (Telegraph Rd corridor): Take the 605 north from anywhere near the La Mirada boundary; Florence Ave is a clean exit with no surface-street delays. About 15 to 18 minutes depending on traffic. Patients in this area often travel during mid-morning or early afternoon to avoid the 605 backup that forms after 4 PM.
Parking: 30-space lot behind the building, accessed from the alley off Brookshire Ave. No street parking required. The lot is ADA-compliant with two handicap spaces directly adjacent to the suite entrance.
Questions Whittier patients actually ask
Five common questions specific to Whittier
I heard 5D Smiles is the most-referred implant practice in Whittier. Why is that?
Whittier is our second-largest referral source after Downey itself. The pattern started organically: a patient from Uptown Whittier had a strong outcome with the Vampire Implants™ Protocol and referred three neighbors within the same year. From there, word spread through the Whittier College alumni network, through the PIH Health Whittier hospital staff community, and through several close-knit neighborhoods in central Whittier. We now see multiple patients per month who were specifically referred by another Whittier resident. We do not advertise heavily in Whittier, so the volume is almost entirely personal referrals, which we think is the most meaningful kind.
How long is the drive from the Whittier College area?
From the Whittier College campus on Painter Ave, the drive to our office at 8500 Florence Ave in Downey is about 14 minutes via Greenleaf Ave south to the 605 freeway north. Students, faculty, and staff at Whittier College often schedule the consultation during a lunch break or after a late-afternoon class. The 605 on-ramp at Whittier Blvd is the fastest entry point from the college side of the city. Off-peak, the same route runs closer to 10 to 12 minutes.
Do you accept PIH Health insurance (Whittier-area PPO)?
PIH Health operates the main hospital in Whittier and many of our Whittier patients are PIH Health employees or carry PIH Health-affiliated PPO coverage. We accept Delta Dental PPO, Cigna PPO, Aetna PPO, MetLife, and Guardian, all of which are common among PIH Health benefit packages. Your consultation includes a live benefits verification call so you know your exact out-of-pocket cost before any treatment begins. HSA and FSA accounts are fully eligible for all implant work.
Do you have evening appointments for Whittier patients working in LA?
Our hours are Monday through Thursday 9 AM to 6 PM and Friday 9 AM to 5 PM. The 6 PM close accommodates most Whittier patients commuting back from downtown LA, El Monte, or anywhere along the 605 or 60 corridors. The last consultation slot is 5:15 PM and runs 45 minutes. Whittier to our Downey office is roughly 12 to 18 minutes depending on traffic, so a patient finishing work in downtown LA at 4:30 PM can typically reach us by 5:00 PM on the 605 with a reasonable margin.
The Whittier we serve
Local landmarks and communities that send us patients
Whittier College is a private liberal arts college on Painter Ave with roughly 1,600 undergraduates and a tightly connected alumni network that spans the entire Whittier region. The alumni community tends to share recommendations with unusual loyalty, and that loyalty has made the college network one of our most consistent referral channels from Whittier. Faculty, staff, and graduate students at the college have also become patients, often scheduling around academic calendars with longer gaps between semester-start and mid-semester breaks.
Uptown Whittier is a historic commercial and residential district centered on Greenleaf Ave north of Philadelphia St. The neighborhood has a dense, walkable character unusual for suburban LA and an affluent, homeowner-heavy demographic that correlates strongly with implant candidacy. Many Uptown Whittier residents own their homes and have lived in the neighborhood for decades, which means word-of-mouth travels through a stable social graph. We have seen Uptown referral chains of three and four patients connected through a single block on Greenleaf.
Whittwood Town Center is the city's main retail anchor on Whittier Blvd near Colima Rd. The shopping center draws from a wide catchment area in central and east Whittier, and several patients have mentioned hearing about us from conversations at stores there. For patients driving from Whittwood, the surface route on Whittier Blvd west is straightforward, typically avoiding freeway congestion entirely on weekday mornings and early afternoons.
PIH Health Whittier Hospital on Greenleaf Ave is one of the largest employers in the city, with roughly 2,500 staff across clinical and administrative roles. Healthcare workers tend to be informed, skeptical consumers of medical services, and the PIH Health staff who have become our patients have often done substantial research before calling. Many carry Delta Dental or Cigna PPO coverage through their employment benefit package, which we accept. PIH Health Whittier is also a referral source in the clinical sense: several of our patients were referred by their PIH Health primary care physician, who recommended implants over a removable partial.
