    Implants placed

A dental implant is a titanium post surgically placed in the jawbone to replace a missing tooth root, topped with a permanent zirconia crown. At 5D Smiles in Downey, CA, single implants start at $3,500 all-inclusive — placed personally by UCLA-trained Dr. Henry Qiu using the Vampire Implants™ Protocol for faster integration and longer-lasting results.

Why patients choose 5D Smiles

Biology beats hardware. Every time.

Most implant practices treat your jaw like a drill site. We treat it like living tissue. The Vampire Implants™ Protocol, developed by Dr. Qiu, uses your own platelet-rich plasma to drive 30–40% faster integration and dramatically lower inflammation. The same doctor consults, places, and restores every implant — so nothing gets handed off, nothing gets lost, nothing gets billed twice.

Most patients land on one of these paths: single tooth implant from $3,500, multiple teeth when you're missing several but still have healthy neighbors, full-arch All-on-6 starting at $24,000, same-day teeth in a day, or a comprehensive full-mouth reconstruction. Dr. Qiu maps the right one for you at your free 30-minute consultation.

The 5D Smiles Protocol · Technology-forward, biology-first

Built for the bodies other offices turn away.

Diabetics. Smokers. Elder patients with bone loss. Patients told their bone is too thin to support an implant. The five-step protocol below is what lets us say yes when other offices say no — every step powered by your own biology and UV-activated titanium technology.

  1. 01

    Pre-op · Digital plan

CBCT 3D bone plan, before we cut.

Every surgery is mapped on a 3D cone-beam scan of your jaw — bone density, nerve location, sinus position. The plan exists in software before the first drill ever moves. Patients see the plan on screen and sign off in writing.

0.1 mm precision · zero surgical guesswork

  2. 02

Start of visit · Your biology

    Your blood, your platelets.

A tube of your blood — same kind of draw as a primary-care visit — goes straight into the centrifuge while we prep the surgical site. Twelve minutes later your platelet-rich plasma is concentrated 5–10× above baseline.

Your platelets · driving every healing pathway

  3. 03

    Implant prep · UV photofunctionalization

    UV-activated titanium.

The titanium surface is photofunctionalized under UV light just before placement. This is the protocol that lets us safely place implants in diabetics, smokers, elder patients, and anyone with compromised blood flow that another office turned away.

For: diabetics · smokers · elders · compromised circulation

  4. 04

    Intra-op · Infection control

    UV-activated laser sterilization.

A UV-spectrum laser passes over the surgical site during placement, sterilizing the bone bed and the implant surface in real time. Bacterial load drops before the implant ever seats — no chemical solutions, no contamination window.

Real-time sterilization · no contamination window

  5. 05

    Placement · No cadaver bone

Bone graft made from your own blood.

If you need a graft (about 1 in 3 patients do), the graft material is bathed in your PRP before placement. No cadaver bone. No donor tissue. No synthetic-only graft. Your body has nothing to reject — everything that goes in came from your biology.

    Zero foreign-body reaction risk

Same protocol on every implant — single tooth, All-on-6, full-mouth. No upcharge. No opt-out. No exceptions. This is the only practice in Downey running the full protocol on every case.

Vampire Implants™ Protocol · Invented by Dr. Henry Qiu

Most implant failures are because of poor healing.

I built the Vampire Implants™ Protocol by combining Dr. Ogawa's UCLA UV-activation research with platelet-rich plasma into one protocol. That's why diabetics, smokers, and elderly patients heal like everyone else here.

How it works

How does a dental implant work at 5D Smiles?

  1. 01

Free 30-min consultation with Dr. Qiu

Thirty minutes with the doctor who'll do your surgery — not a sales coordinator. Includes a 3D CBCT scan ($350 value), itemized treatment plan, and exact pricing in writing.

  2. 02

    Vampire Implant placement

Surgery happens in our Downey suite under IV sedation. We draw your own blood, spin it down to platelet-rich plasma, and bathe the implant in your growth factors before placement. Faster integration, less inflammation, longer-lasting result.

  3. 03

    Healing and integration

Most patients are back to work within 48 hours. Bone fuses to titanium over 8–14 weeks. We check in at 2 weeks, 6 weeks, and 12 weeks — Dr. Qiu personally, not an associate.

  4. 04

    Permanent zirconia crown

Once integration is complete, your final zirconia crown is bonded. Designed to match your natural teeth, covered by our 10-year biological warranty.

What the data actually says

“Dental implants are the most predictable tooth replacement we have. Done well, the implant outlives the crown that sits on it. The hard part isn't the surgery — it's the planning. Every patient at our practice is mapped on a 3D CBCT before we ever take a drill out of the tray.”
— Dr. Henry Qiu, DDS · UCLA-trained · 1,000+ implants placed

The American Dental Association cites a 90–95% implant success rate over 10 years when placement protocols are followed (ADA). The American Academy of Implant Dentistry estimates more than 3 million Americans now have implants, growing by roughly 500,000 per year (AAID). Multi-decade follow-up studies report implant-level survival of 94.6% at 20 years in well-maintained cases (PubMed). At 5D Smiles, every implant is placed with the Vampire Implants™ Protocol — UV-photofunctionalized titanium plus the patient's own platelet-rich plasma — which is what lets us safely treat diabetics, smokers, and patients with compromised circulation that other offices turn away.

Case A: Single-tooth implant

D.R., a 44-year-old from Downey, came to us after her upper left lateral incisor was extracted at another office following a failed root canal. She had been wearing a temporary flipper for six months and was frustrated by the instability during meals. Her bone volume on CBCT was adequate, but the adjacent teeth were slightly crowded, which narrowed the restorative space. Dr. Qiu used a 3.5 mm narrow-diameter implant with a custom abutment, and applied the Vampire Protocol at placement to accelerate soft-tissue closure around the implant collar.

Integration was verified at 10 weeks, slightly ahead of the standard 12-week window. The final lithium-disilicate crown, matched to adjacent teeth by shade guide, was bonded at week 14. D.R. reported she could not identify the implant crown when looking in a mirror without prior knowledge of which tooth it was. At her 12-month follow-up, bone levels were stable, soft tissue was healthy, and she had returned to her full diet including raw vegetables and hard-crusted bread that had been uncomfortable with the flipper.

Total treatment time from consultation to final crown: 16 weeks. Total cost: $3,500, applied to her PPO coverage, which covered $800 of the implant body. Net out-of-pocket: $2,700. She later referred her husband for a posterior implant on the lower right.

Case B: Four-implant posterior bridge

M.T., a 61-year-old male with well-controlled Type 2 diabetes (HbA1c 6.8 at intake), had lost four consecutive posterior teeth on the lower right over a period of nine years, a combination of periodontal disease and two failed root canals. He had been partially edentulous in that quadrant for three years before seeking a permanent solution. Several offices had declined to place implants citing his diabetes. Dr. Qiu reviewed his medical records and confirmed that his glycemic control was within the range supported by current literature for safe implant placement with a modified protocol.

Two implants were placed in the most distal and most mesial positions, supporting a four-unit zirconia bridge (two implant abutments, two pontics). The Vampire Protocol was applied at placement, and the UV-photofunctionalization step was added to enhance osseointegration speed given his diabetes history. Bone grafting was performed at the distal site where ridge width had narrowed. Graft cost was included in the treatment plan at no extra charge.

Integration was confirmed at 14 weeks. Final zirconia bridge delivered at week 16. M.T. described his bite function as better than at any point in the previous decade. At 18-month review, implant bone levels were within 0.3 mm of baseline, well within accepted parameters. His A1c had improved to 6.4 at that visit, which his endocrinologist attributed partly to improved chewing function enabling a more varied diet.

Frequently asked

Common questions about dental implants

  • Developed by Dr. Qiu, the Vampire Implants™ Protocol uses platelet-rich plasma drawn from your own blood at the time of surgery, paired with UV-activated titanium — the surface science researched by Dr. Ogawa at UCLA. The growth factors accelerate bone integration and soft-tissue healing by 30–40% compared to standard placement. Dr. Qiu uses it on every implant.
