A Lakewood patient story
R.T., 63, commuted 10 minutes from Lakewood Center to reclaim a full arch
R.T. grew up in Lakewood and has lived within walking distance of Lakewood Center Mall for three decades. She spent most of her working life at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, where she retired as a senior radiology tech in late 2024. Years of 12-hour overnight shifts had pushed dental care to the back of her priority list. By the time she came to us in January 2026, she had lost four upper premolars to fractures over the previous two years, wore a partial that she described as "embarrassing at family dinners," and was told by a Lakewood-area general dentist that she would need a full upper denture.
She found 5D Smiles through a coworker at Long Beach Memorial whose husband had received an All-on-4 arch from Dr. Qiu two years earlier. R.T. drove the 605 north to Florence Ave, took about 10 minutes door to door, and came in skeptical. Her CBCT scan showed moderate bone loss in the upper left quadrant but enough volume everywhere else for a four-implant supported fixed arch without sinus augmentation. Dr. Qiu spent 70 minutes reviewing the 3D scan with her side by side, walking through every surgical step and the loading timeline.
R.T. chose the All-on-4 fixed arch with a monolithic zirconia final prosthetic. Surgery was completed in a single morning session. She went home with a temporary fixed arch the same day, drove herself (she opted out of sedation and used local anesthesia only), and was back home in Lakewood by early afternoon. The final zirconia arch was seated four months later at a 45-minute appointment. At her 12-month follow-up, all four implants showed complete osseointegration and zero bone loss at the crestal margin.
R.T. now refers two or three coworkers a year from Long Beach Memorial. She brings her CBCT scan printout to the referral conversation because, as she says, "seeing is believing for medical people." The 10-minute drive from the Lakewood Center area has become part of her regular routine for twice-yearly hygiene visits.

Getting to us from Lakewood
What the drive looks like from every Lakewood neighborhood
Our office is at 8500 Florence Ave, Suite 100, Downey, just west of the Downey-Lakewood city line. Lakewood borders Downey directly to the east along Lakewood Blvd and to the south along Florence Ave, which means most of the city is closer to our front door than patients expect.
From the Lakewood Center Mall area (Candlewood St and Lakewood Blvd): Head west on Candlewood one block to Lakewood Blvd, turn north (left), continue to Florence Ave, then turn west (left). The drive is 8 to 10 minutes under normal daytime traffic. This is the most common route for Lakewood patients and requires no freeway access at all.
From Mayfair Park and north Lakewood (Del Amo Blvd and Woodruff Ave area): South on Woodruff to Centralia St, then west to Lakewood Blvd, then north to Florence. Alternatively, Woodruff Ave runs directly to Florence Ave at the north end; that straight shot is about 10 minutes. Both avoid the 605 entirely.
From the 605 freeway (commuting from Long Beach or coming from the south): Take the 605 north to the Florence Ave exit, then turn west. Our office is on Florence between Brookshire Ave and Paramount Blvd. The drive from the south end of Lakewood near Carson Park is about 12 minutes using this route.
From east Lakewood (near Bellflower Blvd and Del Amo): Florence Ave runs east-west through both cities, so take Florence west straight through. No turns required; the office is on the right side of Florence between Brookshire and Paramount. This is a 12-minute drive in mid-morning traffic.
Parking: We have a 30-space lot behind the building accessed from the alley off Brookshire Ave. There is no metered or time-limited street parking to worry about. Two ADA-accessible spaces sit directly adjacent to the suite entrance ramp. For patients who need a drop-off and pick-up after sedation, a designated curb zone on the Brookshire alley accommodates vehicles at any hour.
Questions Lakewood patients actually ask
Five questions specific to Lakewood
How long is the drive from Mayfair Park versus Carson Park in Lakewood?
From the Mayfair Park neighborhood in north Lakewood (near Del Amo and Woodruff), most patients reach our office at 8500 Florence Ave in Downey in about 10 minutes: take Woodruff Ave south to Centralia St, then west to Lakewood Blvd, then north a short stretch to Florence. From the Carson Park neighborhood in south Lakewood (near Del Amo Blvd and Bellflower Blvd), the drive is 12 to 14 minutes via the 605 north to Florence Ave west. Both routes are freeway-optional, so Lakewood patients can avoid freeway ramps entirely during morning rush by staying on Lakewood Blvd or Woodruff and heading directly to Florence. We always recommend Waze or Google Maps for real-time traffic, but under normal mid-morning conditions neither route exceeds 15 minutes.
Does 5D Smiles accommodate Long Beach Memorial Hospital staff who work rotating shifts?
Yes. Long Beach Memorial Medical Center is roughly 3 miles southwest of our office, and we see a steady number of nurses, techs, and administrators from that campus. We understand that rotating shifts, night rotations, and 12-hour days make traditional Monday 9-to-5 scheduling impossible. Our latest weekday slot is 5:15 PM, which is workable for day-shift staff ending at 3 PM or 3:30 PM. For a consultation, we typically need 45 to 60 minutes. For surgical appointments (implant placement or bone graft), the block is 90 to 120 minutes, and we can start those at 9 AM on any weekday if you have a scheduled day off. We also schedule all follow-up imaging visits in under 20 minutes, which is easy to fold into a pre-shift or post-shift window. Call us and tell us your shift pattern; our front desk will build the timeline around it.
Do you accept Boeing and aerospace industry PPO plans common in Lakewood?
We accept most major PPO plans, including Delta Dental PPO, Cigna PPO, Aetna PPO, MetLife, and Guardian, all of which are prevalent among Boeing, Northrop Grumman, SpaceX, and other aerospace employers with large workforces in the Lakewood and Long Beach corridor. We do not accept HMO plans or Denti-Cal. If you have a Boeing-issued PPO card, bring it to your consultation and our team will verify your benefits in real time. Most aerospace PPOs include a meaningful implant benefit (often $1,500 to $2,500 per year for prosthodontic work), which we can apply directly toward your treatment plan. HSA and FSA accounts from Boeing and similar employers are also fully eligible for all our services.
What are your hours, and are evening appointments available for Lakewood patients?
Our regular hours are Monday through Thursday 9 AM to 6 PM and Friday 9 AM to 5 PM. We do not currently offer Saturday appointments. For Lakewood patients commuting along the 605 or Lakewood Blvd corridor, the 6 PM closing on weekday evenings accommodates most schedules. The latest consultation slot is 5:15 PM, and the latest surgical slot (implant placement) is 4:00 PM to allow adequate chair time. If you work in El Segundo, Carson, or Long Beach and commute back through Lakewood, you can schedule a consultation immediately after work and arrive at our office before 5:15 PM on most days. We block the first appointment of each day (9 AM) for patients who prefer to come before work and request a flexible mid-morning start.
How does 5D Smiles compare to dental practices near Lakewood Center Mall?
Lakewood Center Mall (on Candlewood St and Lakewood Blvd) has general dental offices in the surrounding strip centers. Those practices offer implants as one service among many, typically placed by a general dentist rather than an implant-focused dentist. Our clinic is implant-focused: Dr. Qiu personally places every implant using the Vampire Implants™ Protocol, meaning no associate hand-offs and no rotating providers. The clinical difference comes through in case complexity. General practices near Lakewood Center are well-suited for single-tooth simple implants in ideal bone. Lakewood patients with significant bone loss, previous implant failures, full-arch needs, or sinus complications are consistently referred to us from those same practices because those cases require a higher level of surgical precision. We also provide written pricing for the entire treatment at the consultation, so you are not surprised by add-on fees after the first surgery.
The Lakewood we serve
Local landmarks within a 15-minute drive of our office
Lakewood Center Mallopened in 1953 as one of the first large regional shopping malls in the United States, and it remains a defining landmark of the city. Designed as a self-contained community hub, the original development coined the phrase "city in a mall" and brought department stores, a supermarket, and civic facilities under one connected complex for the first time at that scale in Southern California. Lakewood Center sits about 1.5 miles east of our office on Candlewood St and Lakewood Blvd. Many of our Lakewood patients stop at the center after their consultation or hygiene visit, which makes the trip a natural part of an errand-based afternoon rather than a separate medical appointment.
Mayfair Park anchors the north end of Lakewood near Del Amo Blvd and Woodruff Ave. The park includes baseball and softball diamonds, a community center, and a popular walking loop used year-round by the north Lakewood neighborhoods. Patients from the Mayfair Park area are among our most consistent referral sources because the residential streets there are quiet and the drive to our office takes a direct, turn-light-only route down Woodruff or Lakewood Blvd. Several patients have told us they treat the drive itself as a calming transition before a dental visit, which is a perspective we take as a compliment.
Heartwell Park is a 157-acre regional park in the center of Lakewood, straddling the border of Long Beach at the south end. It contains a golf course, an archery range, a recreation center, and extensive walking and biking paths. Heartwell is one of the largest parks in the area and draws families from across the Long Beach-Lakewood corridor. Patients from the neighborhoods adjacent to Heartwell (near Carson St and Lakewood Blvd) reach our office in about 12 minutes via Lakewood Blvd north to Florence.
Long Beach Memorial Medical Center sits about 3 miles southwest of our office on Atlantic Ave in Long Beach. It is one of the largest acute-care hospitals in Southern California with more than 420 licensed beds and a Level II trauma center. We see a consistent stream of patients who work at Long Beach Memorial, including nurses, respiratory therapists, imaging techs, and hospital administrators. For staff in that workforce, our office is a convenient stop between the hospital campus and their Lakewood neighborhoods, and our evening weekday hours are specifically designed to accommodate the scheduling realities of shift-based medical work.
