A Los Angeles patient story
JR, 64, drove from West LA past eight chain-implant billboards to get to our office
JR lives near Sawtelle in West LA. He counted eight national chain-implant billboard advertisements on his drive east along the 10 freeway before he reached the 605 interchange headed toward Downey. He had already visited two national chain locations. At the first, he was quoted $60,000 for an upper and lower All-on-X and offered a same-day financing application before a single X-ray was taken. At the second, the consultation was conducted by a patient coordinator rather than a doctor, and the surgeon he would work with was described as “our specialist on rotation.”
JR's situation was complicated. He had lost most of his upper dentition to a combination of long-term acid reflux and crown failures from a prior general dentist. His bone density on the upper right was borderline for standard implant placement. At our office, Dr. Qiu spent 75 minutes reviewing his CBCT scan and reviewing the two prior corporate consultations. The plan that came out of that appointment was conservative: four implants on the upper arch using a narrower Vampire Protocol design to avoid the sinus floor, and a phased approach where the lower two natural teeth were preserved rather than extracted to reduce total cost.
The total treatment was $28,500, well under the corporate quotes, and covered upper implants with a fixed provisional arch. JR financed $15,000 at 0% APR through our office and paid the remainder at the consultation appointment. Eight months later the upper arch was complete. JR drives the 40 minutes from West LA twice a year for hygiene visits and sends referrals from his neighborhood regularly. He told us on his last visit: “I drove past all those signs and kept going because none of them offered to show me the doctor before they asked for my credit card.”
Not every case from West LA involves prior corporate consultations. Several of our LA patients simply searched for a UCLA-trained implant dentist and found 5D Smiles through that search. What they share is a preference for seeing the same doctor from consultation through final restoration, and a willingness to drive 30 to 40 minutes to get that continuity.

Getting here from Los Angeles
Route times from LA neighborhoods to 8500 Florence Ave, Downey
Our office is at 8500 Florence Ave, Suite 100, Downey, CA 90240. The parking lot is directly behind the building, accessed from the alley off Brookshire Ave. You do not need to find street parking. The suite entrance is ADA-accessible with two designated handicap spaces adjacent to the door.
From Downtown LA (Civic Center, Bunker Hill, Arts District): Take the 5 South toward Long Beach. Exit Florence Ave and turn left (eastbound). The office is on the right side of Florence between Brookshire and Paramount Blvd. Off-peak this drive is 20 to 22 minutes. During evening rush (5 PM to 6:30 PM) allow 30 to 35 minutes. The 5 South is generally moving at off-peak hours by 7 PM if you book a late consultation.
From West LA and Westwood (UCLA area, Century City, Santa Monica Blvd corridor): Take the 10 East to the 605 South. Exit Florence Ave and turn left. This route is 35 to 40 minutes off-peak and up to 50 minutes during mid-afternoon. Many West LA patients schedule a 10 AM or 11 AM slot to avoid both morning and afternoon peak windows.
From East LA and Boyle Heights (1st Street, Cesar Chavez Ave, Indiana): Take the 5 South directly to the Florence Ave exit. This is one of the closest LA sub-neighborhoods to our office. The drive is 12 to 15 minutes off-peak, rarely more than 20 minutes even at peak.
From South LA (Vermont Ave corridor, Leimert Park, Watts): Take the 110 South to the 105 East, then exit Prairie Ave or Lakewood Blvd and head north to Florence. This route is 18 to 22 minutes off-peak. Some South LA patients prefer surface streets via Compton Ave to Garfield Ave for a similar time without the freeway interchange.
Parking at the office: The 30-space lot is never metered and is open during all office hours. Patients receiving IV sedation can have a driver wait in the lot during the procedure. We have a covered drop-off and pickup zone on the alley side for sedation patients.
Questions LA patients actually ask
Five common questions specific to Los Angeles
How long is the drive from West LA to your Downey office?
From West LA and Westwood, the typical route is the 10 East to the 605 South, then exit Florence Ave eastbound. Off-peak (mid-morning or early afternoon) the drive runs 35 to 40 minutes. During the evening commute the 605 can add 10 to 15 minutes. Many of our West LA patients schedule the consultation for 10 AM or 11 AM and treat the round trip as a half-day. The 30-space parking lot behind the building means you step out of the car and walk directly into the suite with no parking search.
Do you serve patients from Boyle Heights and East LA?
Yes. Boyle Heights and East LA are among our most consistent referral neighborhoods. From Boyle Heights, the 5 South to Florence Ave is typically 12 to 15 minutes with no freeway congestion. Our team is fully bilingual (English and Spanish) and Dr. Qiu conducts consultations in either language depending on your preference. All treatment planning documents, financial agreements, and post-op instructions are available in Spanish. We work with a significant number of Spanish-speaking patients from the Boyle Heights, East LA, and Maywood corridors.
Why drive 22 minutes from downtown LA when there are implant practices in the city itself?
The two most common reasons patients give us: single-doctor consistency and transparent pricing. LA has many general dentists who place implants occasionally and several national chains with LA-area locations. At 5D Smiles, Dr. Qiu personally places every implant on every case. There are no associate hand-offs and no rotating doctors. At the consultation you receive a written, itemized treatment plan with locked-in pricing before you leave. National chains and high-volume LA practices typically quote a range and finalize numbers at a follow-up appointment. For patients who have researched implants carefully, the 22-minute drive is an easy trade for that level of consistency.
Are evening appointments available for LA professionals who cannot leave work early?
Our office is open Monday through Thursday until 6 PM and Friday until 5 PM. The last consultation slot on weekday evenings is 5:15 PM, which runs to roughly 6:00 PM. That schedule accommodates most downtown LA and Mid-Wilshire professionals who can leave work between 4:00 and 4:30 PM. The 5 South is reliably 20 to 25 minutes from downtown LA to our Florence Ave exit in the late afternoon before 5 PM peak. We recommend booking the 5:15 slot online and leaving downtown by 4:30 to arrive comfortably.
How does 5D Smiles compare to national implant chains with LA-area locations?
National implant chains typically operate a high-volume model with rotating surgical staff across multiple locations. At a multi-location practice, the clinical outcome can depend on which surgeon is assigned to your case on treatment day, and that assignment may change between consultation and surgery. At 5D Smiles, Dr. Qiu is the only clinician who places implants, which means the person who reviewed your CBCT scan, designed your treatment plan, and quoted your price is the same person who performs the surgery. We also offer the Vampire Implants™ Protocol on qualifying cases, a lower-profile implant design that preserves more native bone than conventional wide-diameter implants. Our all-inclusive pricing is presented in writing at the first visit with no surprise add-ons at surgery.
The Los Angeles we serve
LA neighborhoods and landmarks at the edge of our service area
USC and Downtown Los Angeles form the northwestern anchor of our broader service corridor. The 5 freeway connects USC Village and the Staples Center area directly to our Florence Ave exit in Downey in under 25 minutes off-peak. Several USC Health Sciences Campus employees have come to us for implant work after finding that in-network options near campus are limited to general dentists who offer implants occasionally rather than as a specialty focus. Downtown LA residents in lofts and high-rises along Spring Street or in the Arts District follow the same route and typically schedule morning appointments before their workday begins downtown.
Boyle Heights and East LA represent the Spanish-speaking corridor that sits closest to our office. The communities along 1st Street, Cesar Chavez Ave, and Indiana Street are 12 to 15 minutes from our front door. Our team conducts consultations in Spanish, provides Spanish-language treatment planning documents, and follows up post-operatively with bilingual phone and text support. Many patients in this corridor are referred by family members who are already established patients. The Boyle Heights and East LA patient base represents some of our most loyal long-term patients, in part because word-of-mouth is strong and the commute is short.
Eagle Rock and Highland Park sit in the north LA implant corridor, roughly 18 to 22 minutes from our office via the 710 South to Florence. These neighborhoods have grown substantially in population over the last decade and now have a mix of long-established Latino families and newer residents. Implant inquiries from Eagle Rock and Highland Park tend to come from patients who have already done significant online research, often after looking at the UCLA extension of our training background or reading detailed reviews. We see several Eagle Rock and Highland Park referrals each month through our Google Business profile.
LAX area patients (Inglewood, El Segundo, Westchester) reach us via the 405 South to the 105 East and then south on Prairie Ave to Florence. The drive is 25 to 30 minutes off-peak. We see occasional patients from this part of LA who found us while searching near LAX specifically because they are traveling for work and want to manage implant treatment through a single consistent implant dentist rather than splitting care between multiple offices. The predictable timeline and single-provider model makes coordinating treatment around travel schedules more practical.
