A Long Beach patient story
RC, 51, switched from a Long Beach corporate implant chain after two failed placements
RC lives in Belmont Shore, two blocks from 2nd Street. He had been quoted $47,000 for a full upper arch at a corporate implant chain near the Long Beach Airport. He financed the first two implants through their in-house program, and both failed at the 6-month check. The chain offered a partial credit, a new quote that was $9,000 higher than the original, and a recommendation to see their own bone-grafting specialist at a separate facility downtown. RC drove the 22 minutes to our Downey office after finding us through a Belmont Shore neighborhood Facebook group.
His CBCT scan on arrival revealed the core problem: both failed implants had been placed at an angle that put sustained lateral load on the fixtures during healing, accelerating resorption. The pattern is common at high-volume chains where multiple providers share cases. Dr. Qiu spent 75 minutes with RC at the consultation reviewing the 3D imaging slice by slice. The revised plan used the UCLA Vampire Protocol with four implants in the upper arch positioned to eliminate lateral loading, plus a particulate graft on the two failed sites. Total cost: $26,000 in writing, before RC signed anything.
RC completed treatment over seven months. His 12-month follow-up CBCT showed full integration at all four sites with stable crestal bone. He now drives from Belmont Shore to Downey twice a year for hygiene visits and has referred three neighbors from his street. His words at the 12-month check: "I wish I had driven the 22 minutes the first time."

Getting to us from Long Beach
What the drive looks like from every Long Beach neighborhood
Our office is at 8500 Florence Ave, Suite 100, in Downey, just off the 605 freeway at Florence Ave. Long Beach covers a large geographic footprint, but every corner of the city has a clear freeway path to our door.
From Belmont Shore and Naples Island: Take PCH north to the 405 freeway eastbound. Merge onto the 605 north at the interchange, then exit Florence Ave east. Total distance is roughly 18 miles; plan for 22 minutes in mid-morning traffic. Patients on the Pacific side of Long Beach can also take Lakewood Blvd north directly for a surface-street route in about 25 minutes.
From Downtown Long Beach: Take the 710 freeway north to the Florence Ave exit, then Florence Ave east about one mile. Downtown to our office runs about 22 minutes without freeway congestion. Patients near the Convention Center or Rainbow Lagoon often find this the cleanest route.
From Bixby Knolls and Cal Heights: Take the 405 east to the 605 north, exit Florence Ave. Bixby Knolls is one of the closest Long Beach neighborhoods to our office; the drive is typically 18 to 22 minutes. Atlantic Ave heading north also connects directly to Firestone Blvd and then east to our block.
From the CSU Long Beach area: Take the 405 east to the 605 north. The university sits just south of the 405 and 605 interchange, making this one of the shortest drives from Long Beach, about 20 minutes. Faculty, staff, and students can book a mid-morning slot and be back on campus for an afternoon class.
Parking: free 30-space lot behind the building, accessed from the alley off Brookshire Ave. No meters, no time limits. The lot is ADA-compliant with two handicap spaces directly adjacent to the suite entrance. If you are being driven home after IV sedation, the alley curb has an unmarked pickup zone families can use without entering the lot.
Questions Long Beach patients actually ask
Five common questions specific to Long Beach
How long is the drive from Belmont Shore to your office?
From Belmont Shore, the fastest route is PCH north to the 405 freeway east, then 605 north to the Florence Ave exit. The turn-by-turn is about 22 minutes in normal mid-morning traffic. During peak commute hours (7 to 9 AM and 4 to 6 PM) the 405 between Long Beach and Lakewood slows, so patients coming from Belmont Shore or Naples often schedule a 9:30 AM or 1:00 PM slot to avoid the worst congestion. We have a free 30-space parking lot behind the building so there is no parking stress once you arrive.
Do you serve patients from CSU Long Beach and the university area?
Yes. Students, faculty, and staff from Cal State Long Beach are welcome and make up a meaningful share of our Long Beach patient base. The typical route from campus is the 405 east to 605 north, about 20 minutes. For students on a tight budget we provide a written, itemized price at the consultation so there are no surprises. Many CSULB patients combine their appointment with a stop at the Downey Promenade one mile south of our office on Lakewood Blvd.
I work shifts at the Port of Long Beach and my schedule changes weekly. Can you still see me?
Absolutely. Port workers are among our most appreciated patients precisely because we understand shift-schedule complexity. We hold appointment slots open until 6 PM on weekdays to accommodate returning day-shift workers, and our scheduling team can book a consultation as little as 48 hours in advance when a slot opens. We can also accommodate patients who need sedation and cannot drive after their appointment by working with the Port Workers Community Clinic referral network to arrange a ride coordinator. Call us at (562) 923-4538 and mention your shift schedule when you book.
Do you accept Naval or Port of Long Beach employer insurance plans?
We accept Delta Dental PPO, Cigna PPO, Aetna PPO, MetLife, and Guardian, which cover the majority of Port of Long Beach longshoremen (ILWU Local 13) and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers dental plans. Active-duty and retired Navy personnel with TriCare coverage: we are not a TriCare network provider, but we provide a detailed superbill that you can submit for out-of-network reimbursement. Your $245 consultation includes a full benefits verification so you know your exact out-of-pocket before any treatment begins. HSA and FSA accounts from Port employer plans are fully eligible.
Why drive 22 minutes from Long Beach when there are implant practices in Long Beach itself?
Long Beach has several general dentists who place implants alongside fillings, cleanings, and orthodontics. What Long Beach lacks is an implant-only practice that does nothing else. At 5D Smiles, Dr. Qiu places every implant personally using the UCLA Vampire Protocol on every case. There are no rotating associates, no corporate hand-offs, and no upselling at checkout. Our all-in transparent pricing means the quote you receive at the consultation is what you pay. For Long Beach patients who have been quoted $40,000 or more at a corporate implant chain, our average All-on-4 case runs $24,000 to $30,000 depending on complexity, in writing, before you commit to anything.
The Long Beach we serve
Long Beach landmarks within 22 minutes of our Downey office
Long Beach Convention Center and The Pike anchor the downtown waterfront at Pine Ave and Shoreline Drive. The Convention Center hosts more than 200 events per year, drawing a steady stream of business travelers and local professionals who often fit a consultation into a conference week. The Pike outlets sit directly adjacent, and several of our downtown Long Beach patients book an appointment on the way back from a convention and combine it with dinner at the waterfront. The 710 north from downtown to our Downey office adds about 22 minutes to either end of a workday.
CSU Long Beach is the largest university in the Cal State system by enrollment, with over 38,000 students and a full-time faculty and staff population of several thousand. The campus sits just south of the 405/605 interchange, which is also the on-ramp to our office. Faculty members on comprehensive dental benefits and graduate students without employer coverage both find our transparent all-in pricing valuable: the consultation quote is the treatment price, no surprises. We have placed implants for multiple CSULB department heads and their family members over the past three years.
Belmont Shore and 2nd Streetform one of Long Beach's most affluent residential corridors, with home values running well above the Long Beach median. The neighborhood attracts professionals in their 40s and 50s who prioritize quality over cost and are tired of chain-dentistry experiences. Belmont Shore patients tend to ask detailed questions about materials, technique, and long-term bone preservation: exactly the kind of case Dr. Qiu enjoys most. The 22-minute drive from Belmont Shore on the 405 to 605 is nearly always faster than navigating downtown Long Beach surface streets to a local corporate practice.
The Port of Long Beach is one of the busiest container ports in North America, employing tens of thousands of longshoremen, crane operators, truckers, and logistics workers on rotating shift schedules. Port workers often have above-average dental benefits through ILWU Local 13 and related union trusts, but irregular hours make booking implant appointments at standard practices difficult. We hold late-afternoon slots until 6 PM weekdays specifically to accommodate returning day-shift workers, and our scheduling team is practiced at fitting patients in on short notice when a shift changes. Several of our most loyal Long Beach patients are Port workers who found us after a chain practice could not accommodate their rotating schedule.
