Dental Implant Timeline: How Long Does the Process Take?

Most patients complete their implant journey in 3–9 months. Patients who need bone grafting may take 9–15 months. Here’s every stage:
Consultation & 3D CT Scan
Day 1 — 1 appointmentDr. Qiu takes a 3D cone beam CT scan to evaluate bone density, volume, and anatomy. A treatment plan and cost quote are provided at the same visit. Free at 5D Smiles.
Tooth Extraction (if needed)
Week 1–4 — often same day as implantIf the failing tooth is still present, it’s extracted. In many cases, the implant is placed immediately at the same appointment (“immediate implant placement”). Healing: 1–2 weeks for gum tissue.
Bone Graft (if needed)
Adds 4–6 months healing timeIf insufficient bone exists to support the implant, a bone graft is performed first. The graft must mature before the implant is placed. Not everyone needs this step — only ~30–40% of patients.
Implant Placement Surgery
1–2 hours | Local anesthesiaA titanium post is surgically placed into the jawbone. Done under local anesthesia with optional sedation. Most patients return to work within 1–3 days. Discomfort is typically mild (3–5/10) and resolves in 3–5 days.
Osseointegration (Healing)
3–6 monthsThe implant fuses with the jawbone — a process called osseointegration. This is why implants are permanent. During this time, you can wear a temporary crown or partial denture. No special care required beyond normal oral hygiene.
Abutment Placement
15–30 minutes | Often same day as crownA small connector piece (abutment) is attached to the implant. Often combined with the crown appointment in a single visit. Gums may need 2–3 weeks to heal around the abutment.
Final Crown Placement
1–2 appointmentsImpressions (digital scan) are taken and sent to a lab. A porcelain crown is custom-fabricated to match your natural teeth in color and shape. Fitted and cemented at the final appointment. You’re done.

Can You Speed Up the Process?
Sometimes yes. Options that compress the timeline:
- Immediate implant placement — implant placed at same appointment as extraction. Not always possible.
- Same-Day Teeth (All-on-4) — full arch of teeth delivered in a single day. The implants still osseointegrate over months, but you leave with functional teeth on day one.
- Skipping the bone graft — tilted implant placement techniques (as used in All-on-4) can sometimes avoid the need for bone grafting entirely.
