The Dental Implant Process: A Complete Timeline

Most patients complete treatment in 3–6 months. Here’s exactly what happens at each stage, and why each step matters for long-term success.

1

Free Consultation & 3D Imaging

Day 1 | 90 minutes | $0

Dr. Qiu performs a comprehensive oral exam and takes a cone beam CT (3D X-ray) of your jaw. This imaging reveals bone density, volume, and nerve locations — critical for safe, precise implant placement. You receive a written treatment plan with itemized costs before leaving.

What you’ll learn: Exact candidacy, full cost breakdown, treatment timeline, financing options. No pressure, no obligation.
2

Preparatory Procedures (if needed)

2–8 weeks before implant | Only if required

Some patients need extractions (remove failing teeth), bone grafting (rebuild bone volume), or gum treatment before implant placement. Not everyone needs these — your 3D scan determines necessity. Dr. Qiu performs all preparatory work in-house.

Common prep procedures: Tooth extraction, bone graft, sinus lift, gum disease treatment. All performed by Dr. Qiu — no outside referrals needed.
3

Implant Placement Surgery

1–2 hours | Local anesthesia + optional sedation

Dr. Qiu makes a small incision in the gum, drills a precise channel into the jawbone (using 3D-guided surgical planning), and places the titanium implant post. The gum is closed with sutures. Most patients experience less discomfort than they anticipate — many compare it to a tooth extraction.

What to expect: Mild soreness 3–5 days post-surgery, managed with prescribed medication. Most patients return to work within 24–48 hours.
4

Osseointegration (Healing Phase)

3–6 months | No office visits needed

The titanium post gradually fuses with your jawbone — a process called osseointegration. This biological bonding is what makes implants permanent. The implant becomes part of your skeleton, capable of bearing full chewing forces. This phase requires no treatment; you simply heal at home.

During healing: You may wear a temporary crown or partial. Regular soft-food diet. No special care beyond normal oral hygiene.
5

Abutment Placement

30-minute appointment | Minor procedure

Once osseointegration is confirmed via X-ray, Dr. Qiu attaches a small connector piece (abutment) to the implant post. This abutment will support your final crown. Healing around the abutment takes 1–2 weeks while your gum tissue shapes naturally around it.

6

Crown Placement — Your Final Tooth

1-hour appointment | The moment you’ve been waiting for

A custom-fabricated porcelain crown is cemented or screwed onto the abutment. Your bite is carefully adjusted for perfect function. You leave with a permanent, natural-looking tooth that blends seamlessly with your smile. This is the visit most patients describe as “life-changing.”

Crown specifications: Shade-matched to your natural teeth. Stain-resistant ceramic. Designed for 15–25 years of normal use.

How Long Does the Implant Process Take?

1 Day

All-on-4 Same-Day Teeth

Qualifying patients can receive temporary teeth the same day as implant surgery. You come in without teeth and leave with a full smile. Final permanent arch placed 3–6 months later.

3 Months

Single Implant (Minimum)

From first consultation to final crown in 3 months for patients with adequate bone and healthy gums. Faster for patients who qualify for immediate loading.

6 Months

Standard Timeline

Most patients complete treatment in 4–6 months. More complex cases involving bone grafting or multiple implants may take 8–12 months total.

3-4 Visits

Total Office Visits

Consultation, surgery, abutment, crown. Most patients are surprised by how few visits their treatment requires — and how quickly it’s done.

Types of Dental Implant Procedures

Single Tooth Implant

One titanium post + one porcelain crown. Replaces one missing tooth without affecting adjacent teeth. Gold standard for isolated tooth loss.

Most common

All-on-6

Six implants per arch for patients requiring more support or higher bite forces. Provides additional stability and longevity for larger arches.

For complex cases

Implant-Supported Bridge

Two implants support a multi-tooth bridge — replacing 3-4 consecutive missing teeth without an implant for every tooth.

Multiple missing teeth

Implant-Retained Denture

2–4 implants anchor a full denture that snaps on and off. More stable than traditional dentures; less expensive than full fixed arches.

Denture upgrade

Immediate Load / Same-Day

Implant placed and temporary crown attached in one visit — “teeth in a day.” Requires excellent bone quality and precise surgical planning.

“The most common thing I hear from patients after their procedure is: ‘That was so much easier than I expected.’ Most people build this up in their mind as something terrifying. The reality is, with proper anesthesia and sedation, you feel very little during surgery. The healing is straightforward. And when we place that final crown — when patients see their smile for the first time — it’s one of the most rewarding moments in dentistry.”

Procedure FAQs

Is the dental implant procedure painful?

During the procedure: no. Local anesthesia completely blocks pain signals. You may feel pressure and vibration — but not pain. If you choose oral sedation, you’ll be deeply relaxed and may not remember the procedure at all.

After the procedure: mild to moderate soreness is normal for 3–5 days, similar to having a tooth pulled. Prescribed pain medication and anti-inflammatories manage this effectively. Most patients return to normal activity within 24–48 hours.

How long does dental implant surgery take?

Single implant placement: 1–2 hours including anesthesia and preparation. All-on-4 (full arch): 3–5 hours per arch. If you’re having extractions, bone grafting, or multiple implants placed simultaneously, add 30–60 minutes per additional procedure. Complex full-mouth cases may take a full day.

Do I need to be sedated for dental implant surgery?

Sedation is optional but available. Local anesthesia alone is sufficient for most single implant cases — patients remain awake and comfortable. For All-on-4, extensive work, or dental anxiety, oral sedation is strongly recommended. You’ll be conscious but deeply relaxed, with reduced awareness of the procedure. IV sedation is also available for eligible patients.

What are the risks of dental implant surgery?

When placed by a fellowship-trained specialist using 3D imaging, dental implants have a 95–98% success rate. Risks include: infection (prevented with antibiotics), nerve sensitivity (temporary, from improper placement — rare with 3D-guided surgery), implant failure (2–5% of cases, usually within the first year), and sinus complications (for upper jaw implants, preventable with sinus lift if needed).

Can I eat after dental implant surgery?

Immediately after: soft foods only (yogurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes, eggs). During osseointegration (3–6 months): gradual progression to normal diet, avoiding very hard or chewy foods directly on the implant site. After final crown: you can eat virtually anything — implants restore full chewing function over time.
