The Basics

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium post surgically placed into your jawbone to act as a replacement tooth root. Once it fuses with the bone (a process called osseointegration), a custom crown, bridge, or denture is attached on top. The result looks, feels, and functions exactly like a natural tooth.

How are implants different from dentures or bridges?

Dentures and bridges rest on top of your gums or rely on adjacent teeth for support. Implants are anchored directly in the jawbone — like a real tooth root. This means they don’t slip, don’t require adhesives, preserve your jawbone, and can last a lifetime. Dentures need replacing every 5–8 years; implants rarely do.

What is osseointegration?

Osseointegration is the process by which your jawbone grows around and fuses to the titanium implant post, essentially making it part of your skeleton. This typically takes 3–6 months and is what gives implants their exceptional strength and permanence. Dr. Qiu uses advanced 3D imaging to place implants in optimal positions to maximize osseointegration success.

What is All-on-4 and how is it different from regular implants?

All-on-4 (and All-on-6) uses just 4–6 strategically placed implants to support a full arch of replacement teeth. Instead of placing one implant per missing tooth, the implants are positioned to maximize bone contact and support a fixed prosthetic arch. 5D Smiles specializes in All-on-6, which provides even greater stability. What is Teeth in a Day?

Teeth in a Day (also called Immediate Load Implants) means you receive implants and a set of functional teeth in a single appointment. You walk in with failing or missing teeth, and walk out with a full smile — same day. Not every patient is a candidate, but Dr. Qiu can determine this at your free consultation. Learn more →

Candidacy — Am I a Good Candidate?

Am I a good candidate for dental implants?

Most adults with missing or failing teeth are candidates for implants. The key factors are: adequate jawbone density to anchor the implant, healthy gums, and no uncontrolled systemic conditions (like unmanaged diabetes). Even patients with some bone loss may still qualify — often with a bone graft procedure. Dr. Qiu will assess your candidacy at no charge during your consultation. Read more about candidacy →

I have bone loss — can I still get implants?

Often yes. Bone grafting is a procedure that rebuilds jawbone density before implant placement. 5D Smiles performs bone grafting in-house, so you won’t need to be referred out. The graft typically heals in 3–6 months before the implant can be placed. In some cases, specialized angled implants (like in All-on-4) allow implant placement even in reduced bone.

Does diabetes or other health conditions prevent implants?

Not necessarily. Well-controlled diabetes does not prevent implants — patients with controlled blood sugar have high success rates. Uncontrolled diabetes, active cancer treatment, or severe osteoporosis may require additional evaluation. Dr. Qiu reviews your full health history before making any recommendation.

Can smokers get dental implants?

Yes, though smoking does increase the risk of implant failure. Smokers have slightly lower success rates (93–95% vs. 98%+) due to reduced healing and circulation. Dr. Qiu will review your history and may ask you to quit smoking for a period before and after surgery to maximize success.

Is there an age limit for dental implants?

The minimum age is typically 18 for women and 21 for men — when jaw development is complete. There is no upper age limit. 5D Smiles has placed successful implants in patients in their 80s. As long as you’re in reasonable health, age alone is not a disqualifier.

The Procedure — What to Expect

Does the implant procedure hurt?

Most patients are surprised by how little discomfort they feel. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia — you won’t feel pain during surgery. Afterward, mild soreness for 2–3 days is common and managed with over-the-counter medication. Most patients return to normal activities the following day. Anxious patients can request conscious sedation.

How long does the entire implant process take?

For a single implant: typically 3–6 months total. This includes the initial placement, osseointegration (healing), and final crown placement across 2–3 visits. For Teeth in a Day or All-on-6 cases, you may receive functional temporary teeth the same day, with final permanent teeth in 3–6 months.

What happens at the first appointment?

Your first visit is a free consultation with Dr. Qiu. He takes digital X-rays or a 3D cone beam CT scan, evaluates your bone density, discusses your goals, and presents a written treatment plan with exact pricing. You leave with complete information and zero obligation.

What technology does 5D Smiles use for implant placement?

5D Smiles uses 3D cone-beam CT (CBCT) imaging for precise surgical planning, digital impressions for accurate crown fabrication, and guided implant placement to maximize precision and minimize recovery time. This technology significantly improves outcomes compared to traditional implant placement.

Can I get multiple implants placed at once?

Yes — and in many cases it’s more efficient and cost-effective. Multiple implants can be placed in a single surgical session. For full-arch cases (All-on-4, All-on-6), all implants are placed in one procedure, often with same-day temporary teeth.

Cost & Financing

How much do dental implants cost at 5D Smiles?

Single tooth implants start from $3,000 (including the implant, abutment, and crown). Multiple implants start from $4,500 per arch. Full-arch All-on-6 starts from $18,000 per arch. These are significantly lower than the $30,000–$60,000 quoted by ClearChoice and other franchise implant centers. See our full pricing guide →

Does insurance cover dental implants?

Most dental insurance plans do not cover implants, classifying them as cosmetic. However, some medical insurance plans may cover implants when tooth loss is the result of injury or disease. We’ll help you verify your dental and medical benefits at your consultation — at no charge.

What financing options are available?

5D Smiles offers multiple financing options: CareCredit (0% promotional periods of 12–24 months), Lending Club (extended terms up to 84 months), and in-house payment plans for patients who don’t qualify for third-party financing. Monthly payments can start as low as $149/month. Explore financing options →

Why are implants cheaper at 5D Smiles than at ClearChoice?

ClearChoice is a national franchise with significant corporate overhead — marketing costs, franchise fees, and high-cost locations. 5D Smiles is a local practice with lower overhead. Dr. Qiu’s UCLA training and 1,000+ implants placed means the expertise is identical — the price difference reflects business model, not quality of care.

Can I get a payment plan with bad credit?

Yes. We work with multiple lenders and offer in-house options that don’t require perfect credit. We’ve helped many patients find a payment solution that works within their budget. Come in for a free consultation — we’ll explore every option together.

🩺 Recovery & Aftercare

What is recovery like after implant surgery?

Most patients experience mild soreness and swelling for 2–5 days. We recommend soft foods for the first week. Over-the-counter ibuprofen or acetaminophen is typically sufficient for pain management. Most patients return to work the next day. Dr. Qiu provides detailed aftercare instructions for every patient.

What can I eat after getting an implant?

In the first week: stick to soft foods — yogurt, eggs, mashed potatoes, soups, and smoothies. By week 2–3, most patients transition back to normal foods. Full load-bearing chewing with hard or crunchy foods is typically cleared after osseointegration (3–6 months). With All-on-6, patients often eat soft-to-normal foods within days of surgery with their temporary teeth.

How will I know if my implant is healing properly?

Dr. Qiu schedules follow-up appointments to monitor healing. Warning signs to watch for include: prolonged severe pain, significant swelling after day 3, fever, or the implant feeling loose. These are rare with properly placed implants but should prompt immediate contact with our office.

Can implants fail?

Implant failure is rare — 5D Smiles maintains a 98%+ success rate. The most common causes of failure are inadequate bone density (which is screened for before placement), infection (prevented with antibiotics and proper hygiene), or smoking. Dr. Qiu uses 3D imaging and careful patient selection to minimize failure risk to near zero.

♾️ Long-Term Care & Durability

How long do dental implants last?

A well-placed implant can last 25+ years — and many last a lifetime. The implant post (titanium root) is rarely the issue. The crown on top may need replacement after 15–25 years due to normal wear. Proper brushing, flossing, and regular check-ups dramatically extend implant life. Read more about implant longevity →

How do I take care of dental implants?

Exactly like natural teeth — brush twice daily, floss once a day, and see Dr. Qiu for regular cleanings. You don’t need special implant toothpaste or tools. The simplicity of implant maintenance is one of the biggest advantages over dentures, which require daily removal, soaking, and adhesive application.

Can implants get cavities?

The implant itself and the porcelain crown cannot get cavities. However, the surrounding gum tissue can develop peri-implantitis (a form of gum disease) if oral hygiene is poor. This is why regular dental check-ups are important even after your implants are placed.

Will my implants look natural as I age?

Yes — and they’ll also help you look younger. Unlike dentures, which allow the jawbone to shrink and the face to sag over time, implants stimulate the bone (just like natural teeth), preserving your facial structure. Patients with implants maintain a fuller, more youthful face shape for decades longer than denture wearers.
